One of the most talked about soap storylines currently is Samson and Josh’s lies in Emmerdale, and this week the soap announced a huge development for this story.

Also in soapland, there was a jaw-dropping return in Coronation Street, a new trailer in Hollyoaks and an intriguing secret in EastEnders.

As always, there has been a lot going on, so in case you missed any gossip, here is our regular Sunday round-up of the biggest soap news from the past seven days.

Emmerdale’s Samson tells the truth

For the last few weeks, Emmerdale viewers have been desperate to know when Samson and Josh will get caught out. After Josh threatened Matty last month, Samson was accidentally stabbed by the knife that Matty was holding.

The pair have since lied and said that Matty deliberately caused Samson’s injury, leaving innocent Matty in prison and scared for his life. However, this week, the soap has revealed that his plight could soon be over.

In Friday’s episode, Samson finally admitted to Sam and Lydia that he had lied, and next week, despite pressure from Josh, he will go to the police and change his statement.

Actor Sam Hall told Digital Spy and other media that Samson’s conscience will weigh him down, and said: “I do think that, deep down, his morals are correct. So I think in the end, he himself thinks, ‘This isn’t the right thing to do. We need to do what’s right here.'”

Last week, Emmerdale’s new producer Sophie Roper shared that the soap was currently filming some big stunts for some upcoming episodes. While she didn’t reveal much, she teased that “fire engines were involved”, and actor Jeff Hordley confirmed that Cain Dingle plays a role in the storyline.

But this week we have had a first glimpse at what these scenes might look like, with paparazzi photographers snapping the team shooting on location at a burning barn.

In a photo, Cain and newcomer John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) can be seen carrying a body out of the blaze.

With Moira and Ruby tipped to be at the centre of this new storyline, and Cain being heard calling Moira’s name on set, could one of these characters be in grave danger?

Coronation Street’s huge return

Can you believe that Corrie’s Lauren Bolton disappeared way back in February? Since then, there has been a long investigation with twists, turns, red herrings and false imprisonments – until it was revealed that solicitor Joel was the culprit.

But in a huge twist that many fans did not see coming, this week came the shock reveal that Lauren was in fact still alive. As Roy lay in hospital, Lauren arrived to visit him after being in hiding for months.

This was followed by an impressive hour-long two-hander between Lauren and Joel, which provided flashbacks that showed how she was groomed and abused, while in the present day, Roy discovered that Lauren was five months pregnant.

On keeping this big twist secret, actor Cait Fitton said: “I started back in April, but nobody knew that I was filming. I had to sneak in and out of the building, getting lifts from Calum [Lill, who plays Joel]. I had to get into the boot to make sure I wasn’t seen!”

EastEnders to reveal Ian secret

Meanwhile in Walford, scenes this week showed that Ian Beale is hiding a big secret from his nearest and dearest, sneaking around and taking mysterious phone calls away from the house.

In next week’s scenes – Monday, no less – Cindy will get even more suspicious when Ian says he is going on a leadership course in Manchester, and she and George go to a mysterious address to confront him.

What, or who, they find is still anyone’s guess, but EastEnders has been rather cloak and dagger about the whole thing, so it feels like the outcome could be exciting.

Hollyoaks releases new trailer

This week, Hollyoaks has dropped a new trailer, previewing all the action that will take place over the summer. And to say a lot is going on would be quite the understatement.

At the forefront is the mystery surrounding the identity of gangster ‘Blue’, who recently attempted to shoot Warren. He and others are convinced that it is Freddie, but he firmly denies this – so who is really causing chaos in the village?

The trailer also previews Mercedes’ new restaurant, Casa McQueen, new developments in Cleo and Abe’s relationship, and Martha’s sinister reappearance. Plus, there’s an intriguing clue which suggests that Donny might not be exactly who he seems…

Euros fever hits the soaps

Over the past few weeks, the Euros have caused chaos for soap schedules. But that doesn’t mean that soap characters aren’t as football mad as the rest of us.

This week, EastEnders added in a newly-filmed scene where Alfie, Zack and Harvey were discussing the previous night’s semi-final match between England and The Netherlands. Yes, the football-themed dialogue was a bit clunky, but it’s always impressive when a soap can film a scene, edit it in the same day, and get it finished in time for that evening’s episode.

You would have to be living under a rock not to know that England have made the final in this year’s tournament, with the final to be held this evening (July 14).

Emmerdale have decided to mark the occasion by also filming a new scene to air in Monday’s epsiode, where Cain and Moira discuss the match. You can only assume that they’ve filmed two versions, depending on who wins…

Home and Away’s new bad boy

Over in Summer Bay, Home and Away are introducing new character Iluka, the older brother of Mali Hudson, in a new storyline.

Iluka will arrive on UK screens next week, to the big surprise of Mali, who is spending time with girlfriend Rose to discover that his brother has broken the lock on his house to get in.

He later tells Mali his ulterior motive for visiting Summer Bay, before taking a shine to Kirby when they meet for the first time and immediately asking her out. Is there a new bad boy in town?
