It is with great sadness that we report the passing of beloved Coronation Street star Kenneth Cope at the age of 93. Kenneth first gained prominence in 1961 when he joined the cast of the ITV soap as Jed Stone. His role as the charming, albeit slightly rough around the edges, character made a lasting impression on viewers. Kenneth’s time on Coronation Street spanned from 1961 to 1963, where he became a memorable part of the show’s early years.

After a few years away, Kenneth made a notable return to Weatherfield in 1966, appearing in 56 episodes. He came back once again in 2008, reuniting with the show after a 42-year hiatus. This return was part of a storyline involving the character Tony Gordon, portrayed by actor Gray O’Brien. Kenneth’s involvement was short-lived, but he returned for a special episode in 2014, marking his final appearance in the series.

The sad news of Kenneth’s death was confirmed by his former agent, Sandra Chalas of the Artisan Agency, on Thursday. In a heartfelt tribute on social media, Sandra described Kenneth as a joy to work with and a true gentleman. She shared a touching message from his family, which revealed that Kenneth passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his loved ones. His family honored him as a true icon of British television and film, with a career spanning over 60 years that included some of the most memorable moments in British culture.

In addition to his iconic role in Coronation Street, Kenneth Cope also appeared in other notable television series. He starred as Marty Hopkirk in Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) from 1969 to 1970 and played Ray Hilton in the Channel 4 soap Brookside, a role he held from 1999 to 2002. Born in Liverpool in 1931, Kenneth’s extensive career also included roles in the films Carry On Regardless and Carry On Nurse, as well as a brief uncredited role in the 1963 film Jack. His television work also featured in series like The Avengers and Doctor Who.

Kenneth was married to actress Renée Lister, with whom he worked on Coronation Street in 1961. The couple had two sons, Nick and Mark, who formed the band The Candy Skins, and a daughter, Martha, who is known for her roles in Doctors and EastEnders. Kenneth spent his later years in Southport, where he contributed as a writer for the local magazine The Southport Visitor.
