Valerie rushes home and tells Theo that Kirby was talking to a cop. He brushes off her concerns, feeling positive after a successful press interview with a little help from the pills.
Theo assures Valerie that the “cop” is his friend Rose and there’s nothing to worry about, especially as Kirby would never rat them out. This only incenses Valerie more, as she’s increasingly concerned with the lax attitude Theo has to making public appearances while high.
The next morning, Theo is offered a live interview with a local radio station. The panic sets in and he begs Valerie for another pill so he can do the interview, adamant that the drugs were the only reason he did so well the first time.
Theo lashes out and questions why he can’t have pills, while Valerie can have all she likes in order to forget about her brother. He immediately regrets his choice of words, but Valerie is deeply hurt and storms off. Kirby catches the tail end of the pair’s argument and watches on, clearly concerned.
Meanwhile, Tane refuses to leave the baby’s side at the hospital, not even to eat or rest. When he finally does rush back home, it’s just to grab clean clothes and he barely engages a concerned Mali and Mackenzie. His housemates wonder aloud if he’s a little too invested in this child. Back at the hospital, Tane decides to call the baby “Maia” – the Māori word for “courage”.
Later, Tane overhears Rose and Harper discussing the situation. They confirm that nobody has reached out to claim Maia, and she has been at the hospital for a while, so it may be time to consider an emergency foster carer.
Tane immediately jumps in, promising that he’ll do it in a heartbeat. Harper explains that only Australian citizens and those registered as permanent residents can foster.
