Coronation Street’s David Neilson “amazed” Roy Cropper wasn’t jailed sooner

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street‘s David Neilson has said he’s “amazed” his character Roy Cropper wasn’t jailed sooner.

Roy was recently arrested and charged with the murder of Weatherfield teen Lauren Bolton, having been the last person to see her alive before she disappeared.

Roy had also stirred up further suspicion by cleaning out Lauren’s flat, and he’s now in prison awaiting trial after being denied bail.

Discussing his long-standing character’s big storyline during a recent appearance on This Morning, Nielsen said he’s surprised Roy hasn’t spent time in custody before, despite his sweet nature.

“He’s his own worst enemy! I mean, he needs support from himself, he puts himself there. I’m amazed that I [Roy] haven’t been in prison before because everyone else has!” he shared.

On whether Roy really did commit the crime, the actor continued: “Roy is innocent in every respect, he is innocent of the crime, but he is also an innocent soul.

“He never thought for one minute it would come to this, he truly felt that if he simply answered everything honestly it would all be okay, and he was naïve to assume that being innocent meant that he would be seen to be innocent.”

Things are only set to get worse for Roy, whose beloved pet dog Freddie will be taken hostage by internet vigilantes in scenes airing next week.

The upcoming scenes will see Sam Blakeman call in at the café to take Freddie for a walk, unaware that an amateur sleuth who’s fixated on Lauren’s case is watching him.

After returning to the café and explaining that the dog ran away from him, Nina, Evelyn and Asha find a video uploaded by the sleuths who confirm they’ve kidnapped Freddie.

The group demands that if they want Freddie to be returned safely, Roy must confess to the murder.
