Coronation Street newcomer Sydney Martin has been welcomed with open arms by her new co-stars as it was finally confirmed that she is playing DS Swain’s daughter. Betsy Swain was first seen in the ITV soap as Sabrina Adetiba’s mate.
Her appearance in Weatherfield came after Sabrina was found by Joel Deering in a state of distress outside the police station, having learnt that her brother had been arrested. Quick to offer his help, the solicitor handed her his business card and told her to give him a call.
The solicitor, who fans know is a wrong’un as he’s behind the disappearance and presumed murder of missing Lauren Bolton, later conveniently bumped into Sabrina in the precinct, where they both had a coffee. Joel then tempted Sabrina with alcohol as he poured some into her coffee and pretended to pour some into his cup but he didn’t.
Seemingly trying to impress Sabrina, who was a bit of a love rival to Lauren when she first arrived in Weatherfield, Joel told her she reminded him of an ex, adding that he was “punching” with his former partner, leaving the teen flattered. However, Sabrina’s mate headed over and pointed out Joel was a creep, warning she should steer clear.
She took his card and pretended to chuck it in the bin, only to keep it for herself. And later, viewers seemingly saw why as the currently unknown newcomer confronted Joel and tried to blackmail him, warning she has a “big gob” and would expose his creepy behaviour.
Then, during Friday’s episode (June 28), Betsy made a surprise appearance at Joel’s engagement party and demanded money. A stunned Joel hurriedly escorted her away before reluctantly giving her the cash. By the end of the episode, her identity was confirmed as DS Swain met her daughter in the precinct park, where they had a confrontation before Swain insisted Betsy got in the car and headed home.
The news felt like a victory to Corrie fans who said they ‘knew’ Betsy would end up being revealed as Swain’s daughter after hints of her arrival last month when the detective sergeant bagged the teenager work experience with Carla Connor at Underworld.
Following the scenes, Sydney, from Rossendale, shared the first snap of herself as Betsy outside the iconic Rovers Return as she marked her TV debut. She said: “The hardest secret to keep- Betsy Swain has officially landed on the cobbles.”
The 22-year-old continued: “I couldn’t be more grateful to join the Coronation Street family and to play the daughter of DS Swain. Thank you to everyone for welcoming me with open arms, I can’t wait for everyone to get to know her!”
Calum Lill, who plays Joel, was quick to respond, writing: “Yeeessss here she is. Hassy High Crew,” referring to the school, Haslingden High School and Sixth Form, they discovered they both went to. On-screen mum Vicky Myers said: “Woohoo. She’s here! Betsy Swain. Congratulations. I’m so proud of you! M #2.”
Asha Alahan actress Tanisha Gorey commented: “Hugeee slay!!! We love u already.” Liam McCheyne, who plays Dylan Wilson, posted: “Here she is!!!” Luca Toolan, who played bad boy Mason Radcliffe, added: “Smashing it.”
