Lorna Watson will of course be back in action as unorthodox Sister Boniface.

The nun dabbles in wine making, moped riding, and forensics alongside her religious practises.

She is perhaps better known for solving murders in her local village than her duties at St Vincent’s convent.

Viewers also can expect to recognise some familiar faces as regular cast members Max Brown, Jerry Iwu, and Ami Metcalf return as members of the police force.

The fourth season is also set to feature some very exciting special guests – including Coronation Street star Les Dennis, known for playing former convict Michael Rodwell.

Producers have remained tight-lipped about his role in the series, so fans will have to tune in to find out if he gets cast as a villain or hero this time.

Other guest actors include Katherine Kingsley from The Larkins and Renegade Nell’s Martyn Ellis.

Sister Boniface Mysteries will also be returning for a feature length Christmas special this year, which will see the local theatre group stalked by a killer as they attempt to put on a performance of Cinderella.

As members of the Great Slaughter Amateur Dramatics Society start dropping like flies in the run up to the panto, Sister Boniface gets on the case.

Meanwhile in other episodes chaos ensues as a bucking bronco wreaks havoc on a game show set, a murderous scarecrow terrorizes the streets of Great Slaughter, the Scots invade, and a femme fatale meets a deadly end in a botched stunt.

The new series of hit ITV crime drama Midsomer Murders is ‘too far fetched’

Leading lady Lorna expressed her delight at the show’s return, saying: “It’s brilliant to be back with the gang for series four.

“I feel very lucky to be part of such a lovely show and can’t wait to get cracking, solving crime in the Cotswolds sunshine.”

BBC Studios Executive Producer Neil Irvine added: “I’m thrilled that TV’s favourite forensic nun is returning for a fourth series. The alchemy created by Jude, Lorna and our wonderful cast and Midlands crew continues to delight viewers worldwide.

“This series sees a serial killer on the loose at the Christmas Pantomime and a threat to the convent itself. I can’t wait for the audience to find out if this is the end for St Vincent’s…”
