Joel Deering has been left horrified to discover Betsy Swain’s connection to the police in Coronation Street.
Betsy was introduced in the ITV1 soap recently as a teenager trying to blackmail Joel,
though he had no idea she was the daughter of Weatherfield detective Lisa Swain.
The villain finally discovered how much trouble he was in during Monday’s (August 5) episode as he tried to stop Lauren Bolton from revealing crucial information to the police.
Lauren has been in the hospital after prematurely delivering her newborn baby. Viewers know that Joel tried to force her to miscarry by using labour-inducing drugs last week.

When Lauren introduced Joel to his newborn son Frankie, he promised he’d do anything he could to help mother and child. In turn, Lauren agreed to delete her email to DS Swain.
“I promise you can [trust me], but I can only give you my word,” Joel vowed.
When Lauren questioned whether Joel’s word was worth anything, he coldly replied: “I don’t think you have any other choice.”
Later, DS Swain turned up at the hospital to get to the bottom of the baby’s paternity. The detective wanted to run a DNA test to prove Nathan Curtis was the dad.
Viewers know that Lauren agreed to implicate Nathan under pressure from Joel, even though she’d never met Bethany Platt’s former abuser.
DS Swain subsequently arranged a meeting with Joel where she asked for his help in convincing Lauren to take a DNA test.
Joel’s day got worse when Betsy reminded him he still owed her money for throwing her out of his car in the middle of a rough estate.
As the evil solicitor stewed, he was horrified to see Betsy getting into DS Swain’s car. The soap concluded with Joel realising his blackmailer must be Swain’s daughter.
Last week, Joel actor Calum Lill hinted that the villainous character could be getting in too deep with mounting lies.
“The more plates he’s trying to spin to keep this hidden and not get caught out, I think there’s only so long he’s going to be able to go. With soap justice, the chances of him getting away with it are quite slim,” he told Digital Spy.
“I don’t think it would give the right message if Joel just got away with it. How he finds justice is very interesting, and we’ll have to watch and wait and see.”
