Oliver Farnworth has joined Emmerdale but he’s previously been involved in some
of the most dramatic storylines in Weatherfield
Actor Oliver Farnworth, who played Andy Carver in Coronation Street for three years,
was involved in some of the ITV soap’s most dramatic storylines.
Recently, it was revealed that the star will be taking on the role of newcomer John Sugden in Emmerdale. However, ITV viewers may remember the star from his stint in Coronation Street where he played Andy Carver back in 2014.
Initially, fans saw him masquerading as Gavin, the long-lost son of Michael Rodwell (Les Dennis). The pair formed a close bond and developed a relationship, albeit under false pretences, with Michael’s wife Gail Platt (Helen Worth) complicit in concealing the truth.
During his time on the cobbles, he began working at the Bistro and started a relationship with Steph Britton (Tisha Merry). Gail chose to keep quiet about Andy’s real identity, fearing that the truth could prove fatal for Michael due to his heart condition.
However, things took a tragic turn when his actual son died from the same condition, leading to Michael’s ex-wife Susan Meldrum (Meriel Scholfield) sending him a photo album documenting their son’s life.
Andy Carver was a key character in Coronation Street for three years
At first, he was overwhelmed flipping through pages of baby pictures of Gavin, but as the images progressed, it became increasingly clear that the son he was getting to know was a fraud.
Devastated by the deception, Michael ended things with Gail for not revealing the truth but eventually managed to forgive Andy and the pair mended their relationship.
However, their lives took a dramatic turn when serial killer Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre) entered the scene. Michael grew suspicious of criminal Pat’s scamming activities and decided to investigate his office for evidence.
Caught red-handed by Pat, Michael found himself in a life-threatening situation. As he attempted to escape, his heart condition worsened, leading to his death while Pat stood by, watching.
Pat and Andy came to blows in the soap
Convinced that Pat was involved in his fake father’s demise, Andy sought revenge and planned to expose him.
His plan to report Pat to the police backfired when Pat discovered his intentions, leading to a tense confrontation.
A brawl ensued in Pat’s office, and viewers were left fearing for Andy’s life after he was hit on the head with a laptop.
Pat then transported him to an abandoned house where he was held captive for several months.
In a bid for freedom, Andy struck a deal with Pat, agreeing to look after another prisoner in exchange for Pat’s observation, giving Andy leverage should he decide to involve the police.
Andy left the soap in 2017
Pat accepted the deal and made Andy shoot Vinny Ashford (Ian Kelsey), his former business partner who had betrayed him.
When Andy turned the gun on Pat, he managed to dissuade him from seeking revenge. Pat then seized the weapon and killed Andy with a single shot.
Despite his best efforts to hide the two bodies, both were eventually discovered in 2018 and locals came together for Andy’s funeral.
