Emmerdale star Emma Atkins has admitted she’s struggled to watch the coersive control storyline with Tom King and Belle Dingle.

The 49-year-old actress has played fan favourite Charity Dingle on and off for 24 years and she’s been part of some of the ITV soap’s most gripping plots since she joined back in the year 2000.

In upcoming scenes, Charity and Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) make a grim discovery as they become concerned for Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper) as she leaves the village with her husband Tom (James Chase).

They are both left panic stricken when they arrive at Tom and Belle’s Welsh cottage, where they’re visiting for a trip, only to find it empty.

The place is trashed and the walls are covered in blood, with Belle nowhere to be seen. The pair immediately fear the worst, but has Tom harmed Belle and where are they?

Opening up about her latest storyline, Emma explained: “It was brilliant and working with Jeff again was just magic because I haven’t worked with him in quite a while and we just seem to have this effortless chemistry when we get together because we know each other, we know our history and our characters somehow really work together.

“It’s great that we’re not a couple but we come together a crisis. We trust each other and I love the fact that Cain does listen to Charity and I just loved it.”

Emma went on to reveal that fans have told her that they have been finding it diffuclt to watch Tom and Belle’s coercive control storyline and admitted that she has also felt “uncomfortable” watching some of the scenes.

She said: “I’ve spoken to people who are times struggling to watch it because of the nature of it which is amazing because it shows how powerful it is. I felt so uncomfortable to continue watching at one point so I guess It’s delivering in that way.”

Fans have been begging for Charity and Cain to team up to take down Tom for weeks and Emma remanied tight-lipped when quizzed on whether or not her character will be responsible for taking down the villain.

“I think the fact Charity has experienced level of abuse she recognises the signs and she’s got her eye on him,” Emma teased.

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
