Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) shocked her family when she arrived back
in Weatherfield with new boyfriend Felix (Robin Morrissey) in tow in Coronation Street last month.
The character had met Felix while spending time in the US, and when she bought him home
with her for her summer break from university, he failed to make a good impression on Paul Foreman (Peter Ash), who believed he was a snob.
While the couple weathered the storm and agreed to commit to a long-distance relationship when he returned to America, Monday’s (29 July) episode saw Felix deal Summer a devastating blow.
Summer was stunned to receive a text message from Felix, just as she was returning home after a night out on the tiles with Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey).
A heartbroken Summer revealed to guardian Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) and Paul that Felix felt the distance was too much for their relationship to withstand.
Paul joked he was ‘sorry, not sorry’ to hear about the breakup, as Summer admitted he had more important things to worry about, given the worsening effects of his motor-neurone disease.
Little did Summer realise, at that moment in time, Paul was still thinking of ending his life, after reaching a decision about his future during Friday’s heartbreaking special episode focused on his storyline.
However, moments like this spent with his family during Monday’s episode helped Paul change his mind, as he came to the realisation he ‘wants to stay around for family and friends’.
He told Billy in an emotional speech: ‘I want to go on living for as long as I can, however I can. I’m going to let nature take its course.’
