Exclusive: Coronation Street’s Vicky Myers calls for more Swain and Carla scenes

Coronation Street star Vicky Myers has revealed that she’s keen to see more of her character Lisa Swain’s friendship with Carla Connor.

The two characters struck up an unexpected connection earlier this year as DS Swain continued to work on the Lauren Bolton investigation. Their scenes left some fans questioning whether Swain and Carla could become a couple further on down the line.

Vicky spoke to us about Swain’s future while taking part in a photoshoot for the Inside Soap Awards 2024.

Digital Spy was granted exclusive video access to Corrie‘s nominees photoshoot and you can see the full behind-the-scenes footage at the top of the page.

Asked whether fans’ Swain and Carla romance theory came as a surprise, Vicky told Digital Spy: “It did! It’s a joy to work with Ali [King, who plays Carla]. She’s this powerhouse of a character, but she also is as a woman. It’s brilliant to work with her.

“But yeah, it did. That wasn’t the intention – we just played the scene, so I guess they saw something that perhaps we didn’t. We just played the truth of our characters and it’s progressed from there.

“I think it’s really quite lovely and it’d be interesting for the two of them to have more of a relationship – as a friendship.

“They’re both of a similar age and they’re vulnerable in a similar way. They’ve both built up this façade and protective mechanism, because ultimately they’re scared of being hurt.

“I think that would make an interesting dynamic, because they’re quite similar but also very, very different.”

On whether Corrie could explore a possible romance after all the speculation, Vicky replied: “I don’t know at this point. With the storyline as it is at the moment, there’s so much going on. There’s also the introduction of Betsy Swain, who’s portrayed brilliantly by Sydney [Martin].

“The viewers will get to see that dynamic between mother and daughter and why their relationship is broken. I think that’s massively important and it will help the viewers to realise why Betsy is the way she is.

“I think their family bereavement is also something that could perhaps be explored, as Lisa and Betsy are both grieving.

“So for now, the story is so busy with other things. But I think it’d be really nice if Lisa could go to The Rovers with Carla and have some red wine. I think it’d be nice to see that side of both of them.

“It’d be good to see Swain in the community pub and what she’s like within that community, if she’s ever off-duty!”

Swain is also likely to play a role in the ongoing Joel Deering storyline as the villain’s inevitable downfall gets closer.

Joel’s fiancée Dee-Dee Bailey has been tipped as one to watch in the coming weeks as she starts to spot clues to his guilt in the Lauren case.

Vicky continued: “It’s been really busy over the past few months. Obviously the viewers will know what has happened with Joel and Lauren and Betsy, so I think it will be interesting to say the least, should Lisa find out about Joel’s involvement.

“He’s this predator, who’s hidden in plain sight. I think it obviously would impact her because it makes it all the more personal when it’s her own daughter involved.

“Quite the extent of that, I think is really interesting. There’s lots of twists and turns on the way.

“I think if Swain were to even get a sniff that it was Joel who attacked Lauren, she would make it her mission to bring him to justice. She is a bit like a dog with a bone, to put it mildly. She would make it her mission to get him and quite rightly too.”

Vicky has been nominated for the Best Newcomer prize at the Inside Soap Awards after being promoted to a Corrie regular this year.

Reflecting on the nod, she added: “It was genuinely a real surprise. I didn’t expect it. I didn’t for one minute think this would happen.

“To be nominated with so many other brilliant actresses and actors in this genre of television is a win in itself. It’s brilliant – I’m very happy and very touched.”
