Who is your sporting hero?
AP McCoy and Richard Johnson. Not only are they brilliant jockeys, they’ve been outstanding ambassadors for racing.
What would you be if you weren’t a sportsman?
That’s a difficult question. I’d hope to have done something in sport but let’s just say I’m lucky I know how to ride a racehorse.
Career highlight?
Nothing beats your first winner at the Cheltenham Festival. Mine came on Kayf Aramis in the Pertemps Hurdle in 2009. I still remember the roar from the crowd as I crossed the line.
…And the worst moment?
Giving up the ride on Mon Mome, the 2009 Grand National winner. Venetia Williams had two entries and I chose Stan over Mon Mome. I was delighted Venetia’s stable won but how many chances do you get to ride the National winner? To make matters worse, I fell at the seventh.
If your house was burning down, what one possession would you save?
Once my family were out, there would be a few pictures I’d want to keep but, most of all, my ‘Lester’ (racing’s equivalent of an Oscar) for winning Champion Conditional Jockey in 2008.
Favourite karaoke song?
I’d go for Ho Hey by The Lumineers or anything by Rod Stewart.
Which TV programme can’t you miss?
Home and Away. Seriously! I haven’t missed an episode for four years and I’ve got it on series link.
