Maureen Lipman has just made a major announcement about her future on Coronation Street, revealing she will remain with the show for another year. In an exclusive interview with Alan Titchmarsh on his Love Your Weekend show, Maureen confirmed that she has signed a new contract, ensuring her character, Evelyn Plummer, will continue to be a part of the ITV soap.
When asked by Alan about her plans, Maureen shared, “I’ve been signed up for another year. It’s good for you; it keeps you on your metal.” She also expressed her enduring fascination with the acting profession, emphasizing that she never gets bored with it. Alan, too, praised the industry’s stimulating nature.
Maureen, who previously played Lillian Spencer at Rover’s Return, joined Coronation Street as Evelyn in 2018. Since then, Evelyn has become a beloved character, deeply involved in numerous storylines, including her heartfelt reconnection with her estranged grandson and her recent reunion with her long-lost daughter, Cassie. Evelyn has also developed a significant friendship with Roy Cropper.
The news of Maureen’s extended stay will likely be a relief to fans, especially given earlier reports that she would be taking a break later this year to perform in a pantomime. A Coronation Street spokesperson confirmed, “Dame Maureen is taking a sabbatical from Coronation Street towards the end of the year, and we look forward to seeing her back on the cobbles in 2025.”
