In the final weeks of Paul Foreman’s heartbreaking storyline on Coronation Street, actor Peter Ash has shared some emotional insights. As filming for Paul’s funeral episode has recently been observed, it’s clear that Paul’s time on the show is coming to an end soon. Since Paul’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease was announced in April of last year, the ITV soap opera has been chronicling his battle with the illness.

Paul had previously promised his husband, Billy Mayhew, that he wanted to live for as long as possible, despite initially contemplating ending his life before the disease fully took hold. Peter Ash recently discussed Paul’s upcoming scenes during a 2024 Inside Soap Awards photo shoot, with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage available on Digital Spy.

“It’s going to be very emotional,” Peter revealed, reflecting on what’s to come. “We’re heading towards the end of Paul’s story, which we knew was inevitable due to the lack of treatment options for motor neurone disease. The final scenes are incredibly poignant.”

Peter emphasized the emotional preparation that has been ongoing for a year and a half, acknowledging the privilege of working with a talented cast and crew over the past six years. Despite Paul’s declining health, Peter noted that his character remains true to his spirit, continuing to deliver his signature lines and maintain his humor even through a speech machine.

“I’m deeply honored to have been part of this storyline, which has shed light on such a devastating illness,” Peter said. “When his time comes, it will be a significant moment, and I’m grateful to have contributed to this narrative.”

Looking ahead, Peter was enthusiastic about future opportunities, expressing openness to any upcoming work in TV, movies, or radio. At the 2024 Inside Soap Awards, Peter has earned nominations for Best Actor and Best Storyline, alongside co-star Daniel Brocklebank, who plays Billy, in the Best Partnership category. Peter expressed his gratitude and honor at being recognized, highlighting the strong sense of family and support among the Coronation Street cast and crew.

“Being nominated is incredible, and I’m truly honored,” Peter added. “Everyone at Coronation Street puts in so much effort, and we genuinely support each other. It’s a fantastic environment.”
