When smoking kills 80,000 Britons every year, stubbing out tobacco smoking is a national health priority.
So it is not surprising a large majority of people – plus Labour, other parties and doctors – back a radical Government initiative making it illegal for anybody aged 15 or under this year ever to buy cigarettes. The idea isn’t without problems, not least those of black markets. And in future somebody aged, say, 45, would be able to buy tobacco if they proved their age while somebody of 44 would be denied, creating divisions.
But confronting a wealthy tobacco industry lobbying against what could be the most significant health initiative in our era – including a ban on the sale of vapes with fruity flavours and bright packaging to attract children – is worth championing.
No parent wants their child to smoke, and most addicts want to give up. Stopping them smoking in the first place is a good idea.
Shake off fakes
Ticket scammers stealing more than £1million from Taylor Swift fans is a grotesque exploitation of a sensational talent and those who love her. And the 600-plus cases perpetrated on customers of Lloyds Banking Group is likely to be just the tip of the iceberg.
This ticket exploitation will require tough new laws to stamp it out. Let’s hope Labour follows through on its promise to crack down on this type of scam if it wins power at the next election.

Helen Lederer is right, Coronation Street bosses should include some saucy scenes for her and Bill Roache. It would be good to see mature romance more celebrated on our screens.
Helen and Bill are the perfect pair to spice up Weatherfield’s sexual chemistry. Even at 69 and 91, these screen veterans could teach the younger cast a thing or two about passionate performances.
