Emmerdale is set to deliver a heart-wrenching twist as Tom King’s abusive actions towards dogs lead to tragic consequences. The soap confirmed on Friday, August 16, that Tom’s disturbing behavior will continue in the upcoming episode, where he attempts to harm Piper, Belle’s beloved dog, as a means to manipulate her.
Despite their separation, Tom is relentlessly trying to control Belle by installing hidden cameras at Dale Head and staging crises to reinsert himself into her life. The latest scenes show Lydia Dingle visiting Dale Head to persuade Belle to attend Sam’s birthday party. Although Belle prefers to stay home with Piper, Lydia convinces her to go, and she reluctantly agrees.
Belle leaves Piper at Wishing Well Cottage to play with Lydia and Sam’s dogs while she attends the party. When Belle arrives at the Woolpack for the celebration, she is distressed to find Tom waiting for her. Tom tries to offer Belle the car he had originally intended as a gift, but she rejects the gesture and tells him she wants nothing to do with him. As Belle tries to leave, Tom grabs her arm and asserts his dominance, telling her he decides where she can go. Belle forces him out of the pub with a loud demand.
Later, the episode takes a harrowing turn as Tom spots Piper near Wishing Well and revs his car engine in her direction. The scene cuts away, but viewers later see Tom dramatically crying out to Belle across the village, claiming that Piper was hit by a car. He brings Piper to Belle, wrapped in his jacket, and insists that Piper has been severely injured. Tom rushes Piper to the vet, promising to do his best to save her.
The storyline, developed in collaboration with charities like Refuge and The Dog’s Trust, aims to shed light on the manipulative tactics of abusers who use family pets as a means of control. Producer Laura Shaw explained that this disturbing plot highlights the extreme measures some abusers will take to maintain power over their victims, and the painful reality that domestic abusers often exploit pets.
Tom actor James Chase added that Tom is fully aware of how his actions will affect Belle. By injuring Piper, Tom aims to provoke a strong emotional reaction from Belle, hoping it will allow him to reinsert himself into her life under the guise of comfort and support. This shocking development raises the question of whether it will finally push Belle to report Tom as an abuser.
Stay tuned for the upcoming episodes to see how this distressing situation unfolds and its impact on Belle and the village.
